Hello people! Lets discuss a couple of the commonly asked questions and misconceptions regarding CBD oil
Today we are reviewing:
- Different types and strengths of hemp CBD products
- Dosage amounts and how long a tincture should last
Let’s begin by reviewing some of the various CBD terms out there.
CBD Isolate – CBD isolate in one of the purest forms of CBD as it has gone through a distillation process and other extraction methods to achieve a purity of, but not limited to, 99.7% pure CBD.
CBD Full-spectrum Oil – Full spectrum oil on the other hand is very different. Full spectrum oil is normally manufactured by CO2 extraction or ethanol extraction with no further distillation. The finished product is not pure CBD and contains many other cannbinoids, terpenes, flavonoids and other plant-compounds. Full spectrum oil provides a host of other benefits, though there is usually a much lower amount of CBD in the oil compared to CBD isolate
Hemp Oil – Hemp oil is manufactured the same way as a “Full spectrum oil” so do not be confused when you see this term. Because they often mean the same thing.
Hemp Seed Oil – Hemp seed oil is very different from a full spectrum oil or other hemp oils. Hemp seed oil contains Omega 3:6:9 essential fatty acids and antioxidants but no CBD. Although hemp seed oil is very nutritious to consume because of its antioxidants and essential fatty acids, it should not be considered a CBD supplement. If it is not clearly indicated on the products labelling you can identitfy hemp seed oil from hemp CBD oil from the consistency, and colour. Hemp seed oil is less viscous and is usually a greenish gold colour.
Hemp Terpenes or Terpenes – Terpenes are organic hydrocarbons found in the essential oils of plants and more. You can find terpenes for example in Hemp, citrus fruit, black pepper, pine needles, or even chocolate!. Terpenes do NOT contain any CBD and are not psychoactive. Terpenes contain many medicinal properties so they are beneficial to consume. please check out our next article to learn more about terpenes
Raw Hemp Oil – If you see the word “raw” in any hemp extract, this means that the extract has not been decarboxylated (de-carbed), which measn the extract has not reached a high enough temperature to convert all the cannabinoids from their acid molecule structure (THCA, CBDA, CBGA, etc) to a different molecule structure, (THC, CBD, CBG, etc). Many other benefits can be received from taking raw hemp oil from taking all these cannabinoids in their acid form.
(fun fact: if you ingest THC you can feel the psychoactive effects, but if you ingest THC-A you will not feel any psychoactive effects! This is why THC needs to be decarboxylated before eating to feel the effects)
Understanding dosages & how long a tincture should last
For the sake of our discussion today we will be referring to 99.7% pure CBD Isolate.
Our tinctures are sold in 30ml bottles. The strengths come in 250mg, 500mg, or 1,000mg 99.7% CBD Isolate. Doses are measured in either drops or ml’s (millilitres). CBD dosage should not be compared to dosing with other pharmaceuticals. Number one – It does not work on a dosage by weight model (although they are convenient and remove the fear from starting on the right dose) and number two – you cannot develop a tolerance to CBD.
With this being said, our theory on dosing is based on the following. By taking CBD you are activating the endocannabinoid system, currently many people have a deficient endocannabinoid system. Therefore when someone starts taking CBD the amount really depends on the deficiency or the severity of ailment. So when someone starts taking CBD the standard rule we use is to start out small and gradually increase, until the desired results have been achieved.
Here’s an example: Imaginary Dave suffers from moderate levels of anxiety and has problems sleeping. By applying our dosage method we would recommend imaginary Dave starts of with our Balancing Formula 500mg CBD tincture to be taken 5 drops twice daily resulting in a total of .5ml of tincture and 8.3mg of CBD per day. If Imaginary Dave followed this guideline a 30ml bottle would last him 60 days.
Another example is: Jane has a mature horse, Wildfire, who suffers from chronic inflammation of the joints. By applying our dosage method we would recommend Jane starts of with our Paws Claws and Hoof 1000mg CBD tincture and takes 5 drops twice daily resulting to a total of .5ml of tincture and 16.6mg of CBD per day. If Jane followed this guideline a 30ml bottle would last her 60 days for Wildfire.
If the desired results are not achieved within 7-10 days, consider taking a higher strength tincture. Thus by taking 10 drops twice daily as opposed to 5 drops twice daily, the tincture would last for 30 days instead of 60 days.
If you are still unsure about what dose to start on and what is a safe starting point, start with a small dose and be consistent! take it everyday and pay attention, the changes are subtle yet noticeable and are quite different than taking other supplements.
Hope this helps some of you out there! please like/ share/ comment we always like to hear from those of you out there that are curious!
